Lutein Product Introduction
1. Basic InformationProduct Name: Lutein
English Name: Lutein
Chemical Molecular Formula: C₄₀H₅₆O₂
Molecular Weight: 568.88
Appearance & Properties: Yellow to orange-yellow crystalline powder or powder with uniform color, free of visible foreign impurities and obvious peculiar odor. It is soluble in chloroform and dichloromethane, slightly soluble in ethanol, and insoluble in water.
Raw Material Source: It is mainly extracted from the dried inflorescences of Tagetes erecta L., and can also be obtained from dark green vegetables such as spinach and kale as well as natural plants like marigold. High-purity products can be prepared via synthetic processes, and all raw materials comply with corresponding industrial quality requirements.
Origin of Raw Materials: Marigold raw materials are mainly planted in large-scale cultivation areas including Yunnan, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia of China. Sufficient sunlight and suitable climate in these regions guarantee stable lutein content in raw materials.2. Core Ingredients and PropertiesMain Ingredient: Lutein, chemically named 3,3'-dihydroxy-β,α-carotene, a carotenoid compound and the characteristic core ingredient of this product.
Chemical Properties: It has typical chemical properties of carotenoids. Its molecular structure contains multiple conjugated double bonds, making it sensitive to light, heat and oxygen and prone to oxidative degradation, so it must be hermetically stored away from light. It has a specific melting point range of 193–196°C; higher purity delivers more stable melting point. Lutein is relatively stable under acidic conditions but susceptible to decomposition under alkaline conditions.
Purity Specifications: Conventional purity grades include ≥95%, ≥98% and ≥99%, with different impurity limits for each grade (e.g., total impurities shall not exceed 2.0% for 98% purity products). Higher purity ensures better product stability and compatibility, suitable for application scenarios sensitive to impurities.3. Production ProcessModern extraction and purification technologies (natural extraction or synthetic process) are adopted with standardized production procedures to guarantee stable purity and quality of lutein. Taking natural extraction from marigold as an example, the detailed steps are as follows:
Raw Material Selection: Screen dried marigold inflorescences with bright color, no mildew or insect infestation. Remove impurities such as calyxes and flower stalks via manual or mechanical sorting to control raw material quality from the source.
Pretreatment: Crush and low-temperature dry qualified raw materials to prepare powder with appropriate particle size, improving the dissolution efficiency of active ingredients during extraction.
Extraction Process: Adopt solvent extraction methods (e.g., petroleum ether, ethanol-petroleum ether mixed solvent). Control the solid-liquid ratio (1:8–1:12 g/mL), extraction temperature (40–50°C) and extraction duration (2–3 hours per time), with repeated extraction for 2–3 times. Ultrasonic-assisted extraction can be applied to boost extraction efficiency.
Separation and Purification: Centrifuge and filter the extract to remove solid residues, then concentrate to obtain crude lutein extract. Further purify via column chromatography (silica gel column, gel column, etc.) and recrystallization to eliminate carotenoid impurities (such as zeaxanthin) and other organic impurities so as to enrich lutein.
Drying and Forming: Subject purified lutein crystals to vacuum low-temperature drying to remove residual solvent and moisture and obtain crystalline powder, preventing ingredient oxidation caused by high temperature.
Finished Product Inspection: Conduct comprehensive tests on sensory, physicochemical, purity and microbial indicators of dried products. Only qualified products can enter the packaging process.
4. Product SpecificationsCustomized products with different purity and dosage form specifications are available according to customer demands. Conventional standards are listed below:
Purity Grades: 5%, 60%, 95%, 98%, 99%, among which 98% purity is the mainstream standard with total impurities ≤2.0%.
Dosage Forms: Crystalline powder, ordinary powder; customized oil suspension (lutein content: 5%–20%) is also available to fit diverse application scenarios.
General Indicators: Moisture ≤0.5%, residue on ignition ≤0.1%, total heavy metals ≤10ppm (Pb ≤2.0mg/kg, As ≤1.0mg/kg, Hg ≤0.1mg/kg); solvent residues comply with relevant standards (e.g., petroleum ether residue ≤50ppm).
Packaging Specifications: Small packages (1g/bottle, 5g/bottle, 100g/bottle), medium packages (1kg/bag), large packages (25kg/drum); packaging materials can be customized on demand.
5. Quality Standards and TestingA strict quality control system is established in accordance with relevant standards for food additives and pharmaceutical intermediates. Core test items and requirements are as follows:
Qualitative Identification: High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Infrared Spectrophotometry (IR) or Ultraviolet-Visible Spectrophotometry (UV-Vis) is adopted for identification to confirm correct product structure and exclude counterfeits. HPLC identification requires consistent retention time of chromatographic peaks with reference standards.
Content Determination: HPLC (external standard method) is used to accurately test lutein content to meet labeled purity specifications, with a detection wavelength of approximately 445nm. Traceable lutein reference standards are adopted.
Impurity Test: Related substances (zeaxanthin, other carotenoid impurities) are detected via HPLC, with single impurity ≤0.5% and total impurities ≤2.0% for 98% purity grade. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry is used for heavy metal detection to comply with safety limit requirements.
Microbial Indicators: For food and health care product applications, microbial limits are specified: total aerobic bacterial count ≤100CFU/g, molds and yeasts ≤10CFU/g; pathogenic bacteria including Escherichia coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus shall not be detected.
Other Indicators: Physicochemical indicators such as moisture, residue on ignition, melting point and solubility shall be tested in line with corresponding national standard methods to ensure product applicability and stability.
6. Application FieldsThanks to its chemical structure and properties, lutein is widely applied in food, health care products, cosmetics, biological research and other industries:
Food Industry: Used as a natural colorant or food additive in beverages, pastries, dairy products, snack foods, etc., to render yellow to orange-yellow color, complying with food additive usage standards.
Health Care Product Industry: Served as raw material for dietary supplements to produce capsules, tablets, oral liquids, powders and other preparations, and can be compounded with zeaxanthin, vitamins and other ingredients for various dosage forms.
Cosmetic Industry: Added to skincare products (face cream, lotion, essence, etc.) and color cosmetics (lipstick, eyeshadow, etc.) as cosmetic raw materials, complying with safety specifications for cosmetic ingredients and applicable to multiple cosmetic formulas.
Biological Research Field: Used as biological experimental reagents for carotenoid-related research, cell experiments, food additive development and other scientific research projects.
7. Storage Conditions and Shelf Life
Packaging: Vacuum-sealed with food/pharmaceutical grade aluminum foil bags, protected by light-proof fiber drums or moisture-proof cartons with desiccants inside. Small-sized products are packed in brown sealed glass bottles for enhanced light and moisture resistance.
Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated and dark place with sealed packaging. Avoid dampness, direct strong light exposure, high temperature (frozen storage at ≤-18°C or refrigerated storage at 0–5°C is recommended), and mixed placement with oxidants or odorous substances to prevent oxidative degradation.
Shelf Life: 24 months under specified storage conditions (subject to product label). It is recommended to use up the product within 1 month after opening, and seal tightly immediately after each use to avoid oxidation and contamination.
8. Precautions
